Hy-Vee Athlete of the Week: Connor Artman (Illini West Boys Basketball)

Connor Artman, a Junior point guard at Illini West High School is our Hy Vee Athlete of the Week. Last week he helped lead his Chargers team to a 2-0 record with wins over Monmouth-Roseville and Clark County. In the Clark County victory, Connor compiled 16 points, shooting a perfect 9-9 from the foul line. Illini West is now 5-3 on the year.

I spoke with Connor today about his approach at the foul line, how he views himself from a leadership standpoint, the versatility that his team brings to the table, and the tragic pasing of his teammate Cale Hartrick last season. Cale would be a senior on the team this season, but passed away in May after a long battle with cancer.

Hy Vee Athlete of the Week: Carter Fayhee (Macomb Boys Basketball)

This week's Hy-Vee Athlete of the Week is Macomb Boys Basketball Junior Forward Carter Fayhee. Carter averaged 18 points last weekend as the Bombers beat Illini West Friday and fell to Quincy Notre Dame Saturday.

He's the lone returning full-time starter from last year's West Central Conference Champion team, and has understandably taken on a major role with this year's squad. He leads the team in points and rebounds, and often plays point-forward for Jeremy Anderson's squad. HEre's my full conversation with Carter below.

Macomb Bushnell Girls Basketball Postgame Wrap Up

The Macomb Bombers Girls Basketball Team won a fun one 46-45 at the Hangar last night against Bushnell-Prairie City.

The game started slow, with BPC holding a 6-2 advantage after the first quarter, but as the game progressed, it was a back and forth contest until the fourth quarter, where Macomb built up a ten point lead. The Spartans were able to come back and tie it up late, but the Bombers prevailed with some timely foul shooting, capitalizing on the fact that BPC was in double bonus territory well before Macomb reached that point. Macomb improved to 2-8, while Bushnell fell to 2-5.

Sophomore Madyson Allen for BPC had a game high of 15 points, while MHS was led by Juniors Jordan Hare and Sophie Whitford with 14 apiece. Hare and Whitford went a combined 15-19 from the charity stripe.

Listen below to my postgame conversation with Bombers Head Coach Zach Keene. He also mentions details about the free girls basketball clinic he will be holding prior to Saturday's home contest against South Fulton.

Her former junior high coach, Lawson Barclay, noted that the running conditions were not ideal. Said Barclay, she ran on a "challenging course on a cold and blistery day."
