Leatherneck Baseball's Ian Koch Named All-Summit League Second Team

Western Illinois' Ian Koch (Crystal Lake/Central) represented Leatherneck Baseball on the All-Summit League team. The freshman right-hander earned Second Team honors as a starting pitcher following the announcement by the league office on Tuesday night (May 24). It's the fifth straight year a Western Illinois pitcher earned All-Summit League honors.
Koch ended the year with a 3-6 record and 4.73 ERA in a team-leading 66.2 innings pitched. He led Western in starts, wins, innings pitched and shared the lead in complete games.
Among the Summit League overall leaders, Koch finished ninth in ERA, 10th in innings pitched, and eighth in starts.
He started 10 conference games (tied for the lead), and his 54.1 innings of Summit League action ranked sixth. All three of his victories, including his complete game, came during league play, tying him for eighth.
At the start of the year, Koch was used in the bullpen but then injuries to the starting rotation (four in all) pushed him to the weekend 'Top 3'. In fact, during his last four starts, the freshman served as the team's number one starter.
His first Friday start was a complete game 5-1 win at South Dakota State. He struck out a season-high seven batters and scattered six hits. Koch earned the Summit League 'Pitcher of the Week' award for his effort. Koch also earned wins at Omaha to clinch that series and at North Dakota State where he didn't allow an earned run in 6.2 innings.

The Leathernecks finished 14-36 overall and sixth place in the Summit League at 11-19, just three games out of third place.

Marlow then drew her second walk of the game, but her and Bottino were left stranded as the Leathernecks fell by a score of 3-2.
Marlow led the team with two hits, two walks, an RBI and one run scored. Karissa Kouchis garnered two base hits for her 15th multi-hit game of the season.
Emily Ira got the nod in the circle and pitched 4.2 innings, giving up seven hits, two earned runs, and striking out five.

Western Illinois University Athletics 3rd Annual WESPY Awards Winners

Western Illinois seniors Karissa Kouchis (Orland Park, Ill.) and JD Furr (Crawfordsville, Ind.) earned the Athletics Department's top honor, being named Senior Female and Male Student-Athlete of the Year, respectively, on Sunday night (May 1).
They were honored as part of the WESPYS, the third-annual banquet honoring the athletic and academic achievements by Leatherneck student-athletes during the 2015-16 season. The banquet, sponsored by McDonough Telephone Cooperative, was held inside Western Hall. More than 500 people were in attendance.
Seniors who have exhausted their playing eligibility received their gift during the WESPYS, as representatives from all 20-sport programs in addition to cheerleading were honored.
Starting all 44 games at the leadoff position, Kouchis has led the team with a batting average of .313 all season. She has scored 19 runs off of 47 hits including four doubles and two triples while driving in 10 runs. Earlier this season, she strung together an eight game hitting streak and has collected two or more hits in 13 games.
Kouchis has helped raise more than $150,000 for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals through WIU Dance Marathon as the Director of Dancer Relations. Along with being the President of SAAC, Karissa has been tabbed a College of Fine Arts and Communication Scholar, a Communication and Journalism Department Scholar and a 2016 Thompson Scholar.
"Since Karissa started here four years ago she has made an impact athletically, academically and community service wise. She has been a leader on the field, in the classroom and in the community every year. She pushes herself to be the best that she can be to make her teammates the best that they can be. I'm very proud of her for reaching this accomplishment and I'm proud of what she has accomplished over her four years as a Leatherneck," said softball head coach Holly Van Vlymen.
As a senior, Furr was named to the 2015-16 Swimming and Diving All-Summit League team while also being a 2016 Summit League Academic All-League honoree (second Academic honor in his career). During his senior season, Furr recorded a personal best in the 200 IM, the seventh-best time in program history.
Over the course of his career, Furr holds the Western Illinois record in the 200 breaststroke while also being a member of the record-setting 200 medley relay team. Furr also holds the third-best time in the 100 breaststroke and the second-best time in the 400 medley relay. He is on track to earn his fourth Summit League Academic Honor Roll selection.
"JD has been a very strong individual on our team. He has always been very intense when it comes to training, competing, and his studies. Racing was always when JD stepped up for the team. He would get beat during practice by some of our other breaststrokers, but when it came down to a race, my bet was always on JD. He smashed the school record in the 200 breaststroke his junior year, and he did this in a time trial without anyone to race. He hated to lose in the pool, and that was the same way he approached his academics. Anything less than an A was losing," said swimming/diving head coach Greg Naumann.
Matt Tanney, Director of Athletics, opened the banquet. Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator Lisa Melz-Jennings introduced Lindsey Kuitse (women's soccer) for the Invocation and thanked the title sponsor and everyone associated with the banquet to make it a success. Student-Athletes on SAAC presented the awards.
