McDonough C.A.T.S. Softball To Hold Fundraiser

The McDonough C.A.T.S. softball teams will host another fundraising event at Rocky's Bar & Grill at 1420 W.Jackson in Macomb. The event will take place on Thursday, May 5th (2016) from 5-9 p.m. Donations will be accepted on the night of the event & a portion of the food sales will also benefit the organization. Rocky's specials that night will include their savory BBQ Pork Ribs ($13.99 for a half-rack dinner or $19.99 for a full-rack dinner) or their delicious Chop Steak Dinner ($11.99).

Leatherneck Men's Basketball Adds Transfer Moxey

Western Illinois head men's basketball coach Billy Wright announced that Lynrick Moxey will join the Leatherneck program this fall. Moxey is a 6-2 transfer/junior guard, who played his first two seasons at Lamar Community College (Colo.) where he averaged 8.0 points per game & nearly 4.0 rebounds per game last season.

 

Moxey joins C.J. Duff (Waukegan, Illinois/Carmel), Jeremiah Usiosefe (Hamilton, Ontario/The Hill Academy) and Chris Snyder (Cameron Park, Calif./Ponderosa) in this year's signing class.

Forecast Forces WIU Baseball To Cancel Wednesday's Home Twin Bill

With potential heavy rain in the forecast for today (Wed.4/27) the Western Illinois baseball doubleheader versus SIU Edwardsville from Boyer Stadium in Macomb, has been cancelled. Leatherneck baseball is back at in this Friday, when they kick-off a three game Summit League series against South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D.

Leatherneck Men's Basketball Adds 6'10" Transfer To Program

Western Illinois head men's basketball coach Billy Wright announced the addition of Chris Snyder to the Leathernecks. Snyder, a 6-10 center from Ponderosa High School in Shingle Springs, Calif. spent his first year collegiately at Regis College in Denver (3.0 ppg/1.8 rpg) and last seaon at Casper College (2.9 ppg/2.3 rpg). Snyder earned First Team "All-Delta League" three times while in high school, while averaging 15+ ppg his junior & senior seasons.

 

He joins C.J. Duff (Waukegan, Illinois/Carmel) and Jeremiah Usiosefe (Hamilton, Ontario/The Hill Academy) in this year's signing class.

Western Illinois Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) To Host Fundraiser

The Western Illinois Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a holding a fried chicken dinner fundraiser to benefit pediatric cancer research on Wednesday, May 4. The event will take place at Magnolias in Macomb from 5-8 p.m. and all proceeds will go to Alex's Lemonade Stand, a pediatric cancer research foundation dedicated to raising money and awareness of childhood cancer causes, especially research into new treatments and cures.

 

The event costs $10 for students and $15 for non-students. Reservations are required and can be made at (309) 833-2725.

Leatherneck Softball & Baseball Finish Up At North Dakota State

After dropping Saturday's double-header at North Dakota State, the Western Illinois softball team came up short against the Bison on Sunday, falling 7-4. Hailey Duwa & Rachel Beatty hit back-to-back homeruns in the setback. Leatherneck softball falls to 11-31 overall (4-8 Summit League) and will meet conference rival IPFW in Ft. Wayne this weekend.

 

The Western Illinois baseball team lost their single game at North Dakota State on Friday, and split on Saturday: winning game one of the twin bill, 12-8 but losing the nightcap, 3-0. Connor Currier combined for five hits & three RBI in Saturday's split for the Leathernecks, who are now 11-25 this season (8-10 Summit League). Western baseball will host SIU-Edwardsville for a double-header from Boyer Stadium Wednesday (4/27) starting at 3pm.

WIU Track & Field Wraps Up Illinois Twilight

The Western Illinois men's and women's track & field team competed at the "Illinois Twilight' in Champaign on Saturday, with the women tallying 24 points and the men notching 21.5 points. The Leatherneck women were led by Shelia Grant-Shaffer's second place finish in the hammer throw and the women's 4X400 meter relay team set a new top time this season. Jeffery Padesky scored a sixth place finish in the men's pole vault. Leatherneck track & field are back at it this Thursday for the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

Leatherneck Football To Host Annual Bruce Craddock Memorial Spring Game

Leatherneck Football will host the annual Bruce Craddock Memorial Spring Game tonight at 7pm from Hanson Field with an offense versus defense scoring format. The offense earns points on getting a: first down (1 point), extra point (1), 2-point conversion (2), field goal (3), touchdown (6), and explosive play (2).The defense earns points for: forcing a punt (1), pass break-ups (1), tackle for loss (1), missed field goal (2), 3-and-out by the offense (2), fourth down stop (2), sack (2), stopping a 2-point conversion (2), take away (3), and touchdown (7).)

 

Tailgating will be held in Q-Lot where parking is available. Fans may enter on the North end of the stadium & admission to tonight's spring game is free of charge.

WIU Women's Golf Wraps Up Play At Conference Championships; Men's Golfer Blackburn Honored By Summit League

The Western Illinois women's golf team wrapped up play at the Summit League Championships in Nebraska City, Neb. on Wednesday. The Leathernecks shot a team three-round total of 966 finishing in seventh, Denver won the overall team event carding a 878, led by Jessica Carty's top individual score of 217. Sophomore Allie Leingang was tops individually for the Leathernecks, finishing 16th. 
 
Western Illinois men's junior golfer Andrew Blackburn was named Summit League "Golfer of the Week" on Wednesday. Blackburn helped lead the Leathernecks to a second place finish at last weekends Beu/Mussato Invitational hosted by WIU, finishing third individually. Leatherneck men's golf is idle until the Summit League Championships set for May 1-3.

Leatherneck Baseball Rained Out Wednesday; Releases Summer Camp Information

Western Illinois baseball at SIU-Edwardville was postponed yesterday due to the weather. The two teams will now play a double-header at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium next Wednesday, April 27, with two seven inning games starting at 3pm. Leatherneck baseball will begin a Summit League series this Friday vs. North Dakota State in Fargo. First pitch of game one is set for 6:30pm.

WIU Women's Golf Through Two Rounds At Conference Championships; WIU Women's Tennis Wins Again

Round two of the women's Summit League golf tournament concluded yesterday. After two days & two rounds, the Western Illinois women's golf team improved four strokes from their round one tally, carding a team 312 on Tuesday but falling to seventh in the overall standings. Denver still leads the tournament & the Leathernecks Allie Leingang is 8th individually. The third and final round wraps up today in Nebraska City, Neb.
 
Western Illinois women's tennis scored their second consecutive win yesterday, beating Quincy University 5-2 from the Brophy Courts. Arianna Demos & Nicole Jones picked up a win at #2 doubles, while Demos, Jones, Courtney Lubbers, Maria Bessmertnaya and Jenna Wallace all scored singles wins. Leatherneck women's tennis has two Summit League matches this weekend in Omaha, versus host Omaha Friday & South Dakota State on Saturday.

Leatherneck Women's Basketball Signs Alivia Kaufmann

Western Illinois University head women's basketball coach JD Gravina announced the signing of Alivia Kaufmann to the program and will join the Leathernecks this fall. Kaufmann, a 5-8 guard from Jacksonville (IL) HIgh School, averaged 22.5 points, 3.5 assists & nearly four rebounds per game, earning her Central State-8 player of the year accolaids & two separate IHSA all-state honors. She joins Sam Pryor and Andi Pierce in the 2016 signing class.

WIU Women's Golf Through Day 1 of Summit League Championship; Monday's Areal Scores

After carding a team 319, the Western Illinois women's golf team is currently fifth at the Summit League Championships in Nebraska City, Neb. The Leathernecks are just four strokes back of 2nd place Oral Roberts while Denver leads after a team best 295. Allie Leingang's first round 77 has her tied for seventh individually. The second round tees off this morning.

Leatherneck Athletics Sunday Recap

After falling twice to Omaha on Saturday, the Western Illinois softball team rebounded with an offensive explosion Sunday to win the third game of the series, 14-8. Nina Maggio had three hits & scored three runs and Holly Hoelting added three hits & three RBI in the win. Leatherneck softball improves to 11-28 overall (4-5, Summit League) and will visit North Dakota State this weekend. 
 
The Western Illinois baseball team lost it's series finale to IPFW yesterday, losing game three 8-1. Mark Garton notched two hits in the loss. Leatherneck baseball falls to 10-23 on the year (7-8, Summit League) will have a non-conference match-up at SIU-Edwardsville on Wednesday. 
 
The Western Illinois women's tennis team shut-out visiting St.Francis on Sunday, 7-0, improving Leatherneck women's tennis to 5-11 on the year. Western women's tennis will host Quincy University on Wednesday at 3pm. Leatherneck men's tennis lost a non-confernece home match to Creighton on Senior Day Sunday. Seniors Nikola Pavlovic, Ross Smith & Kerry Nozum were recognized.

WIU Track & Field Wrapped Up Lee Calhoun on Saturday; Men's Golf Concludes Beu/Mussato Invite

The Western Illinois women's track and field team claimed the 2016 Lee Calhoun Memorial Invitational title Saturday (April 16) afternoon, as the Leathernecks tallied 194.5 points en route to its first Lee Calhoun title since 2006. The men's side finished in fifth place with 77.5 points. On the day, five individuals and two relays earned event titles. The women's team got out to a fast start, winning the 4x100 relay title in the second event of the day in season-best time of 48.81. WIU's 4x400 relay capped the competition when the quartet of Kaliyah Cobb, Phyllis George, Alyssa Johnson, and Sierra Woods posted a time of 3:56.01. The time bests the previous season-best for the 4x400 team by five seconds. 
 
Cobb would go on to have a standout meet, as the junior would claim individual titles in the 100 and 200 meter dash events. Cobb posted a wind-aided time of 11.90 to take the 100 and a career-best 24.93 in the 200. She would share the podium in both events, as Woods finished third in the 100 (12.17) and second in the 200 with a season-best time of 25.10. Johnson took home the 800 title when she ran to a time of 2:13.56, a new season-high.
 
Tevin Taylor and Sheila Grant-Shaffer each earned top honors in the field in the triple jump and shot put, respectively. Taylor's jump of 43-11 ¾ is a new season-best, while Grant-Shaffer's mark of 43-7 ¼ is also a season-best.
 
Three different Leathernecks took home second in field events, as Max Ford (javelin - 183-03), Mary-Bianca Fuller (discus - 121 – 11) and Jeff Padesky (pole vault - 15-06 ¼) each contributed to the team score. Josh Thomas ran to a second-place finish in the men's 400 hurdles with a time of 54.97 while George did the same in the women's 400 (58.32).
 
Grant Kaiser found the podium twice in the distance events, finishing third in both the men's 1,500 (4:04.37 – personal best) and 5,000 (16:05.60).
 
Western's women's team dominated the shot put, as three Leathernecks placed in the top five. Following Grant-Shaffer's top finish was a third-place showing by Abbi Smith (39-0 ¾) and a fifth-place effort by Jasmine Swanagan (38-08 ¼). The Purple and Gold would see three more third-place finishes out of Megan McGlone, Loucreasha Smith, and Khalyia Lawson. McGlone's bronze came in the 100 hurdles (15.27), Smith posted a time of 1:16.68 in the 400 hurdles, and Lawson jumped to a mark of 16-9 ¼.

Western Illinois men's golf wrapped up action in their lone home event of the year, the 44th annual Beu/Mussatto Invitational Saturday afternoon (April 16) in second place overall. The two-day event took place at Harry Mussatto Golf Course and featured a 12-team field. The Fighting Leathernecks purple team, which finished five strokes out of first, finished with marks of 290, 303 and 292 in the three rounds, while the gold team finished in eighth place with a 927 (307-304-316). Leading the gold team was Jackson Wetherbee who shot a 220 and tied for sixth place overall. His 220 score was made up of 74 in round one, a team-low 68 (-4) in the second round, and a 78 in round three.Alex Templin also tied for sixth place with a 220. The senior golfer hit a 72 to open the competition, and 74s in rounds two and three. William Woods won the overall team event (286-298-296--880).

Leatherneck Football Announces Kick-Off Times For 2016 Home Contests

Western Illinois announced the kickoff times for the five games at Hanson Field this fall. The Leathernecks could potentially have a ‘Top 25’ match-up to open at Hanson Field on September 10th versus Northern Arizona. The Family Day kickoff between Western (ranked 22nd last year) and NAU (ranked part of the 2015 season) is scheduled for 3 p.m.

 

Western’s first Missouri Valley Football Conference game at home is against Indiana State on October 8th, highlighting Homecoming Weekend. Kickoff is also scheduled for 3 p.m.

 

Western plays host to defending national champion North Dakota State under the lights on October 22nd at 6 p.m. The Leathernecks close out their regular season home schedule on November 5 and 12th with a 1 p.m. kickoff against Illinois State and Northern Iowa, respectively.

WIU Volleyball Adds Four; Leatherneck Track & Field To Host Lee Calhoun Memorial Invite

The Western Illinois volleyball team added four recruits on National Signing Day Wednesday. Kayla Gresl, a 5-6 Defensive Specialist (Appleton, Wi. - Xavier); Claire Grove, a 5-11 Outside Hitter (Naperville, Ill. - Neuqua Valley); Riley Schumacher, a 6-1 Middle Hitter (St.Charles, Ill. - St.Charles East) & Hannah Walker, a 5-9 Setter (Battle Creek, Mich. - Delton Kellogg).

Leatherneck Baseball Tops St. Ambrose; Area High School Scores From Wednesday

The Western Illinois baseball team scored a 9-1 home win over St.Ambrose at Boyer Stadium on Wednesday. Roman Visintine tallied three hits & three RBI in the win, while Sam Cottingham-Beard (1-0) tossed six strong innings for his first win this season. Leatherneck baseball improves to 10-20 this season & will get back to Summit League Conference play on Friday, when they host a 3-game series with IPFW as part of WIU Baseball Alumni Weekend.

Leatherneck Softball Drops Two At SIUE; WIU Baseball Home Wednesday

The Western Illinois softball team lost a double-header at SIU-Edwardsville on Tuesday. The Cougars beat the Leatherencks in game one, 3-0 while SIUE took game two, 4-1. Emily Ira & Kaycee Hart each suffered losses in the respective games for Western, while the Cougars Baylee Douglas notched wins in both contests. Rachel Beatty & Kelsey Marlow each had two hits on the day for the Leathernecks, who fall to 10-26 on the year and will welcome Summit League rival Omaha to Mary Ellen McKee Stadium in Macomb this Saturday & Sunday. 
 
The Western Illinois baseball team will host non-conference St. Ambrose University this afternoon from Boyer Stadium. First pitch is set for 4pm and today is "Military Appreciation Day." This weekends Western baseball home series with IPFW is also "Leatherneck Baseball Alumni Weekend."
 
In all, there are 11 home Leatherneck athletic events this week. Leatherneck Men's Golf Finishes Bradley Invite Monday

Western Illinois men's golf concluded play at the 2016 Bradley Invite in Peoria on Monday, finishing a team 906 in third place. Host Bradley won the team event with a team 891, while Creighton (904) finished second, two strokes better than the Leathernecks. Western's Sean Miller finished fourth individually. Other Leathernecks in the top 10 included: Adam Falk (6th), Andrew Blackburn (Tied 7th) and Alex Templin (10th).
 
Western's final regular season tees off this weekend, when the Leathernecks host the WIU Beu Mussatto Invitational on Friday and Saturday (4/15-4/16).

Final Round Of Indiana State Invitational Cancelled; Leatherneck Women Finished Tied For 3rd

Western Illinois women's golf finished tied for third place with a 313 in the 2016 Indiana State Spring Invitational after the final day was cancelled due to weather. The Leathernecks were led by Alex Krehbiel who hit a 76 in round one, which put her in a tie for seventh place overall. One stroke behind Krehbiel was Allie Leingang and Allison Farrell who each tied for 12th place with scores of 77. Western is back in action April 18-20 with The Summit League Championships in Nebraska City, Neb.

Macomb High School Softball Changes Today (4/11) and Thursday (4/21)

Today’s varsity/sophomore softball games vs. BWP have been moved from Good Hope to the Macomb High School Varsity Softball Field.  Start time for varsity is 4:30. The sophomore game will start at 6:00.
 
The varsity/sophomore softball games vs. Galesburg on April 21, have been moved from Macomb to Galesburg High School. Both games will start at 4:30.

Leatherneck Men's & Women's Golf Head Into Final Round At Respective Invites On Monday

The Western Illinois men's golf team is in second place after day one & the first two rounds of the Bradley Invite in Peoria. The Leathernecks trail the host Braves by five strokes heading into today's final round. Western has five golfers in the top 10, including: Carter Morrison (3rd), Adam Falk (7th), Alex Templin & Andrew Blackburn (tied 8th) and Sean Miller (tied 10th). 
 
The Western Illinois women's golf team wrapped up the first round of the Indiana State Invite, tied for third place (with Oakland University). The Leathernecks trail the host Sycamores by seven strokes and second place William Woods by three shots, heading into the final round today. Western sophomore Alex Krehbiel is currently tied for seventh individually, while teammates Allie Leingang & Allison Farrell are tied for 12th.

Leatherneck Men's & Women's Spring Alumni Games Set For April 30th

Western Illinois Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson announced that the men's and women's soccer teams will be holding their spring alumni games on Saturday, April 30. The women will kick off at 5 p.m. with the men following at approximately 6:30 p.m. A social will follow at 8 p.m. The event costs $25 dollars and includes a t-shirt, food, and beverages. Leatherneck Baseball Hosts Conference Clash With Oral Roberts This Weekend

The Western Illinois baseball team returns home from a four-game road trip for a Summit League Conference showdown between the top two teams in the league when Oral Roberts visits Macomb this weekend. The Golden Eagles come in tops in the conference at 17-11 overall (7-2, Summit) while the Leathernecks are 8-18 this season (6-3, Summit). Game one from Boyer Stadium is set for 3pm this afternoon (Fri. 4/8) and the teams will now play a Saturday double-header beginning at 11am. Admission to all WIU students & the general public is free.

Macomb High Athletics Moves Lee Calhoun Track Meet To Saturday; Thursday Area Scores

Due to the cold temperatures and high winds predicted for this evening, Macomb High Athletics is postponing the Lee Calhoun Track Meet at MHS, until tomorrow/Saturday, April 9 at MHS Field.  Field events will begin at 11:00 am. Running events will begin at noon.

Leatherneck Student-Athletes To Host CONNECKS Event

Join the WIU Leatherneck student-athletes in a day full of FUN, with CONNECKS: Creating Special Connections with Leatherneck Athletics. This is intended for area individual with special needs to have a fun-filled day with their favorite Leatherneck athletes. The event will take place this Saturday, April 9th behind the Brophy Hall Tennis courts, West Side of Brophy Hall from 10am-1pm. There's a variety of games & stations, lunch, pictures with Rocky & the athletes. Attendees are  invited to stay after and enjoy the Leatherneck baseball teams home game with Oral Roberts from Boyer Stadium.

WIU's Templin Named Men's Golfer Of The Week; Leatherneck Women's Soccer Adds Emily Bollman

Western Illinois men's senior golfer Alex Templin was named Summit League "Golfer of the Week," sharing the honor with South Dakota's Jordan Rykal. Templin helped lead the Leathernecks win the Hoosier Invite hosted by Indiana University last weekend, when he finished tied for eighth place individually. 
 
Western Illinois Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson announced the addition of Emily Bollman to the women's soccer program. Bollman has signed her National Letter of Intent and is set to join the team this coming fall. Bollman is a 5'5" forward out of Coal Valley, Illinois who spent the last four years playing varsity soccer for Alleman Valley High School. She also played club soccer for Sporing QC in the Quad Cities.

Leatherneck Track & Field To Host "Run For Those Who Can't Relays"

Western Illinois men's and women's track & field will host the "Run For Those Who Can't" Relays Thursday, April 7th. The event will be held tomorrow at the track at Hanson Field on the campus of WIU, for kids aged 12 & under. The events include 100, 200 & 400 meter runs & a 3-legged 100 meter race. If interested, just show up at Hanson Field at 4:45, cost is $15 and includes enteries to all events, pizza and an event t-shirt. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for children with type-1 diabetes.

The Macomb coed track & field team took part in a meet at Camp Point Central Monday, with the Bombers winning for the boys & Lady Panthers winning the for the girls.  Macomb's Jacob Poore won the 110M & 300M hurdles, while teammate Tre Augusta won the 200M dash & shot put. The Lady Bombers Allison Torrence won the shot put & discus.

Leatherneck Baseball's Game At Bradley Moved From Wednesday To Tonight

With rain the forecast for the Peoria, Ill. area, Western Illinois baseball's game at Bradley, which was originally scheduled for this Wednesday, has been moved to this Tuesday (April 5). First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Dozer Park in Peoria.

Western (8-17 overall, 6-3 Summit League) most recently defeated Omaha on the road, topping the Mavericks in 2-of-3 games to take the series. WIU is 6-3 in league play this season, having won each of its three league series 2-1.

Leatherneck Baseball Wins First Ever Series At Omaha; Western Softball Splits At South Dakota Sunday

The Western Illinois baseball team won at Omaha Sunday, 10-2, winning their first ever road series against the Mavericks. Colton Pogue, Mark Garton, Nick Schrader & CJ Schaeffer all had two hits in the win, while Ian Koch (1-3) went six strong innings for his first win this season. Leatherneck baseball improves to 8-17 overall (6-3, Summit League) and will play at Bradley on Wednesday. 
 
The Western Illinois softball team split a double-header versus South Dakota in Vermillion on Sunday, falling in game one 7-3 but winning game two, 3-2. Sydney Bottino combined for five hits in the "twinbill", while Emily Ira tossed a complete game for the win in game two, tallying 12 strike-outs. Leatherneck softball is now 10-24 on the year (3-3, Summit League) and will enjoy a 10-day break, playing next on April 12 at SIU-Edwardsville.

Western Illinois Men's Golf Wins Hoosier Invite; Leatherneck Women's Golf Fourth at Bradley Invite

The Western Illinois men's golf team captured their first invitational crown since 2011, winning the Hoosier Invite on Sunday, hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington (Ind.). The Leathernecks shot a two-day 578, seven strokes better than Illinois State & 10 shots better than host Indiana. Alex Templin and Adam Falk each carded two-day 145's to tie for 8th place individually. Leatherneck men's golf will next take part at the Bradley Invite April 10-11. 
 
Western Illinois women's golf wrapped up play at the Bradley Invite on Sunday, finishing tied for fourth place. Host Bradley won the event, while Loyola & Indiana State also finished ahead of Western. The Leathernecks were led individually by Allie Leingang who finished tied for seventh & Anna Cullinan who tied for ninth. Next up for WIU women's golf is the Indiana State Invite on April 10-11.

The 39th Annual Leatherneck Club Golf Classic is set for Monday, June 6. The cost is $125 per person & includes: Food and drinks at the Sunday social on June 5 at the Macomb Country Club starting at 5pm and on Monday, 18 holes of golf, cart, registration gift, box lunch, social, and dinner.
