Western Illinois interim director of athletics and search committee chair Matt Tanney announced Tuesday (Dec. 29) that two candidates for the head football coach opening are scheduled to visit campus this week. The two candidates are Charlie Fisher and Rob Ash.
Fisher has spent the last two years as the associate head coach at Richmond, working as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. This season, the Spiders advanced to the semifinals of the FCS playoffs (10-4 overall record) while earning a ‘Top 10’ national ranking.
With more than 30 years of college coaching experience, Fisher has spent time as an assistant coach at: Penn State, Miami (Ohio), Vanderbilt, Temple, North Carolina State, West Georgia, Lenoir-Rhyne, Ole Miss and Eastern Kentucky. From 1993-97 he was the head coach at West Georgia and posted a 36-17 record with a share of the 1997 Gulf South Conference championship and two postseason appearances. He was a graduate assistant on the 1982 Eastern Kentucky team that won the FCS national championship. His campus and community open forum will take place on Wednesday (Dec. 30) at 1 p.m. inside the Corbin-Olson E-Classroom.
Ash, most recently the head coach at Montana State, owns a 246-137-5 career coaching record in 36 years as a head coach. He went 70-38 during his nine years at MSU, and early in the 2015 season the Bobcats ranked among the ‘Top 10’ in the FCS polls. He took Montana State to the postseason four times and captured at least a share of the Big Sky Conference title three consecutive years (2010-12).
He was named the 2011 Liberty Mutual Division I FCS ‘Coach of the Year’ and 2012 AFCA Region 5 ‘Co-Coach of the Year’. Ash is the all-time winningest coach at all three places he was head coach at – Montana State (9 years), Drake (125-63-2/18 years) and Juniata (51-36-3/9 years). Western Illinois interim director of athletics Matt Tanney announced on Wednesday (Dec. 23) members of the search committee to hire the next Leatherneck Football coach is in place.
The eight person committee includes: John Biernbaum (associate vice president, Student Services), Laurie Black (Registrar's office), Dr. Tom Cody (Faculty Athletic Representative), Cathy Early (WIU Board of Trustees and Athletic Department Hall of Fame member), Dr. Algerian Hart (coordinator of Graduate Program, Kinesiology), Amy Spelman (director of WIU Alumni Association), Brett Taylor (football student-athlete) and Tanney, who will serve as Chair of the committee.
The Western Illinois men's basketball team fell at Loyola in Chicago last night, 72-67. The Leathernecks rallied from 15 points down in the second half to within three, but eventually lost to the Ramblers. Garrett Covington tallied 19 points and Jabari Sandifer added 12 in the losing effort. Western men's basketball concluded the non-conference portion of their schedule at 7-4 and will begin Summit League play on Friday, January 1st at Omaha.

Western Illinois head softball coach Holly Van Vlymen announced the 2016 schedule on Thursday (Dec. 17). The Leathernecks will play 42 regular season games during the 2016 campaign, nine of which will be played in front of a home crowd at Mary Ellen McKee stadium.
The Purple and Gold open the season with three consecutive tournments in February, beginning with the Ramada UNI-Dome Classic on Feb. 12-14 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. For the third consecutive season, WIU will participate in the Total Control Sports Invitational hosted by UIC the following weekend on Feb. 20-21. The Leathernecks will travel to Auburn, Alabama, for the Tiger Invitational on Feb. 26-28 to close out the month.
In March, the Leathernecks will head to Ohio for the Miami Invitational on March 5-6. The following weekend, WIU will open it's longest road swing of the season, consisting of 12 games over spring break. The trip will open with five games at the Jayhawk Invitational on March 11-16, which is hosted by Kansas. Play will continue with a game at Wichita State on March 15, followed by a doubleheader at Mizzou on the 16th. The spring break road trip and tournament play will conclude with the 2016 Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana on March 18-20, when the Fighting Leathernecks will face four different squads.
South Dakota State will visit Macomb for the 2016 home opener and the beginning of league play on March 25-26 for a three-game series.
The following weekend, the Leathernecks will travel to South Dakota for three games against their Summit League foe on April 2-3. Following a mid-week doubleheader matchup at SIU-E on April 12, Western will welcome the 2015 Summit League Champion North Dakota State to Macomb on April 23-24 for a three-game series. To close out April, Western will play at IUPUI on the 29th and 30th for a three-game matchup.
The Leathernecks will faceoff against the Fort Wayne Mastodons on May 6-7 at Mary Ellen McKee to close out the regular season. The 2016 Summit League Championships are hosted by North Dakota State and are set for May 10-14 in Fargo, North Dakota.
Western Illinois softball coach Holly Van Vlymen announced that the program will be hosting high school and youth camps this January. The high school camps will take place on Saturday and Sunday, January 16-17, while the youth camp will run on Sunday, January 24. WIU's high school camp is open to girls in the 7th grade or older while the youth camp is available to girls in the 2nd through 6th grade. The fourth-annual Leatherneck Baseball Lead Off Dinner will take place on January 31st, inside The Forum, downtown Macomb. This year's guest speaker is former Major League Baseball infielder and current Pittsburgh Pirates front office staff member Jamey Carroll, a 12-year veteran who played with six different MLB organizations. Western Illinois Athletics announced Tuesday, that a search committee will be formed to hire the next Leatherneck head football coach. The committee will begin work next week on a national search to hire the replacement for former head coach Bob Nielson, who's accepted the same position at South Dakota.
Leatherneck men's Track and field athlete Tyler Younkin was tabbed The Summit League 'Male Indoor Track Athlete of the Week' yesterday. Western Illinois Athletics announced the resignation of Bob Nielson as head coach of the Leatherneck Football program on Monday (Dec. 14). Nielson, who recently completed his third year at Western, posted a 16-21 record during his tenure.
"Thanks to Coach Nielson for his three years of service to the University; he certainly helped move the program forward. Although we just recently completed our season in the FCS Playoffs, there is already great excitement in looking ahead to next year," said interim athletic director Matt Tanney. "There are many positives around the football program, including the return of a talented, young nucleus of student-athletes and a majority of returners on both sides of the ball. I intend to move quickly to find the right person to lead our football program at a championship level."
The Leathernecks faced eight nationally-ranked programs for the second consecutive year, while playing the nation's toughest schedule this fall. A 6-5 regular season (7-6 overall), with three 'Top 25' wins, helped Western earn an at-large berth for the FCS Playoffs. Western won on the road at Dayton before falling at second-seed Illinois State.
The top four seeds for the 2015 Macomb-Western Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament were announced last night. Western Illinois men's soccer sophomore forward Drew Whalen was named to the NSCAA NCAA Division-1 All-West Region Third Team on Wednesday. Whalen, the reigning Summit League 'Offensive Player of the Year', led the league with 23 points and 10 goals during the 2015 season, and guided the Leathernecks to a No. 4 seed in the league tournament.
Western Illinois University Athletics has announced that it will discontinue the Leatherneck Men's Tennis program, following the 2015-16 season. The program was 0-20 last season & a combined 2-36 the past two seasons.
