Leatherneck Football Wins At Dayton In FCS Playoffs; Will Face Illinois State Saturday

The Western Illinois University football team scored a 24-7 road win at Dayton on Saturday, in round one of the FCS playoffs. Nikko Watson ran for 152 yards and a score, while Sean McGuire had touchdown passes to Lance Lenoir & Stacey Smith... Pete Swenson recorded seven tackles and four sacks for the Western defense, that had six total sacks, three interceptions and a fumble recovery. Leatherneck football improves to 7-5 & will visit Illinois State this Saturday at 1pm. Catch the game locally on 102.7FM & on ESPN3. The Western Illinois women's basketball team scored a 75-59 win over Bethune-Cookman at the North Florida Classic on Saturday behind Sophie Reichelt's 23 points and 12 rebounds. The 4-3 Leathernecks travel to Charleston to play Eastern Illinois this Wednesday at 7pm, hear it on 104.1FM. Leatherneck men's basketball suffered their first loss of the season at Creighton Saturday, falling 97-67. Western men's basketball will host Silver Lake this Wednesday at 7pm & you can hear it locally on 102.7FM.

Macomb Boys Basketball Falls In 3rd Place Game At Pittsfield Tourney

High School boys basketball from Saturday, at the Saukee Turkey Tourney in Pittsfield, Payson-Seymore beat Macomb, 55-40. The 2-2 Bombers will next play on Friday at home versus Illini West. Catch the varsity game on 100.1FM at 7:30.
 
Other high school boys basketball scores sent in from Saturday, from the Suns Classic in Augusta, Mendon Unity over Rushville/Industry, 58-54 and West Hancock topped Southeastern, 54-27. Area High School Boys & Girls Basketball Scores From Tuesday (11/24)

Around high school boys basketball last night, at the "Saukee Turkey Tourney" in Pittsfield, Macomb improved to 2-0 beating Jacksonville (Routt), 49-34. Grant Hannant & Marquese Woods led the Bombers with 13 and 12 points respectively. Also in Pittsfield, Payson-Seymore topped Illini West, 61-54. At the West Division of the "Spoon River Tip-Off Classic" in Bushnell Tuesday, host Bushnell-Prairie City beat Beardstown, 51-37... the Spartans will play again tonight at 7:30 against West Prairie & you can hear that game on 104.7FM. West Prairie won their game over Havana last night, 60-46 behind Michael Purdy's 29 points. 
 
High School girls basketball last night, Macomb rallied from 15 points down to be Mercer County in Aledo, 57-54 behind Mia Lambert's 20 points. Other area girls scores, Lewistown topped West Prairie, 70-21... Central/Southeastern over Mendon Unity, 37-28 & Monmouth-Roseville topped West Hancock, 74-58.

Leatherneck Women's Basketball Falls To SEMO on Tuesday; Western Men's Hoops Home Wednesday

The Western Illinois women's basketball team dropped their "Elementary Day" game yesterday at home to Southeast Missouri State, 89-84. Michelle Maher led the Leathernecks with 29 points in the loss, while teammates Taylor McClintock & Taylor Higgenbotham were also in double-figures with 15 & 14 points respectively. The 3-2 Western women's basketball team heads to the University of North Florida Classic this weekend & will play a pair of 1pm games on Friday and Saturday, versus Towson (Friday) and Bethune-Cookman (Saturday), catch both games locally on 104.1FM.

Macomb Boys Basketball Scores Season-Opening Win; Area High School Girls Hoops Scores

Area high school boys basketball tipped-off last night... at the Saukee Turkey Tournament in Pittsfield, Macomb scored a 67-59 win in overtime over Western High. Grant Hannant led Macomb with 27 points & teammate Carter Fayhee tallied 25 in the win for the Bombers. Macomb heads back to Pittsfield tonight and plays Jacksonville (Routt) at 8pm. Also this evening, the Bushnell-Prairie City boys basketball begins their season by hosting the West Division of the Spoon River Tip-Off Classic... the Spartans play Beardstown at 7:30 and you can hear that game on 104.7FM.

Leatherneck Football Gets At-Large Bid For FCS Playoffs

The Western Illinois football team finished the regular season at 6-5, and courtesy of the toughest schedule in the nation in the toughest conference (Missouri Valley Football Confernece) in all of FCS football, the Leathernecks earned an at-large playoff birth on Sunday and will travel to 10-1 Dayton, members of the Pioneer League. Saturday's game will kick-off at 11am, and you can hear the game on 102.7FM wth the pregame show starting at 10:30am.

Western Illinois Women's Basketball Falls at #23 Iowa

The Western Illinois women's basketball team's upset bid at #23 Iowa last night, came up short as the Leathernecks fell 96-81 in overtime. Michelle Farrow, Taylor Higginbotham & Jasmine Patrick all tallied 14 points in the loss for Western Illinois, while Mallory Boyle added 12 points & nine rebrounds in the setback. Leatherneck women's basketball falls to 2-1 and will host Chicago State from Ufkes Court at Western Hall tomorrow at 7pm. The game will air locally on 104.1FM, and adults who purchase tickets to Saturday's "Senior Day" Leatherneck football game at home with South Dakota State at 1pm, can use that ticket stub for a general admission ticket to the WIU women's basketball game on Saturday night.

Western Illinois Football To Host "Senior Day" Saturday Vs. #5 South Dakota State

Make plans to attend the Western Illinois University football game this Saturday... Leatherneck football sits at 5-5 and needs your support, as 6 wins are needed to be playoff eligible. Western football hosts S.Dakota St. for "Senior Day" Saturday at 1pm from Hanson Field. The Jackrabbits come in at 8-2 and ranked 5th in the FCS.

 

Leatherneck Athletics also has some promotional events. Saturday's game is Kids Day. All kids 12 and under receive free admission when accompanied by an adult. Those who purchase a football game ticket can bring the ticket stub to Western Hall Saturday night and receive a free general admission ticket to the women's basketball game at 7 p.m. versus Chicago State.

Leatherneck Men's Basketball Improves to 3-0 For First Time Since 1989-90 Season

The Western Illinois men's basketball team improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 1989-90 season, after hammering visiting Illinois-Chicago at Western Hall last night, 84-57. JC Fuller led a balanced scoring attack with 19 points, while Garrett Covington added 17 and Jabari Sandifer tallied 16 points. Leatherneck men's basketball travels to Charleston for a non-confernce road match-up with Eastern Illinois on Saturday at 7pm & you can hear it on 102.7FM.

Leatherneck Men's & Women's Basketball Improve to 2-0 After Sunday Wins

Two days after upsetting #17 Wisconsin in Madison, the Western Illinois men's basketball team hosted & defeated Hannibal-Lagrange yesterday, 94-57. Garrett Covington led a balanced scoring attack for the Leathernecks with 14 points, while teammates Jabari Sandifer & JC Fuller each added 13. The 2-0 Western men's basketball hosts Illinois-Chicago tomorrow night at 7pm and you can hear it on 102.7FM. The Western Illinois women's basktball team scored a 78-74 home win over SIU-Edwardsville on Sunday, to also improve to 2-0. Michelle Maher led the Leathernecks with 19 points, while Michelle Farrow added 18 & Taylor Higgenbotham tallied 17 in in the win. 
 
The Leatherneck football team beat Indiana State, 37-30 in overtime on Saturday to improve to 5-5. Nikko Watson ran for 153 yards and a career-high three touchdowns in the win while Sean McGuire threw for 332 yards with a touchdown pass & had a rushing score. For his efforts McGuire was also tabbed the Missouri Valley Football Confernece's Co-Newcomer of the Week. Leatherneck football will wrap-up the regular season Saturday at home vs. South Dakota State at 1pm.

Leatherneck Men's Soccer Ends Season; WIU Men's & Women's Basketball Tips-Off Regular Season

The Western Illinois men's soccer team concluded it's season last night, falling to top-seed & tourney host Denver, 4-nil in the Summit League Championship semifinals. Leatherneck Athletics announced Thursday that women's head soccer coach Ted Flogaites will not return next season and that a search will begin immediately. 
 
The Western Illinois women's basketball team will tip-off it's regular season tonight when they host Central Methodist at 7pm from Ufkes Court at Western Hall. As part of the Leatherneck Sports Network, the game will air locally on 104.1FM starting at 6:45... WIU women's basketball head coach JD Gravina announced the signing of two future Leathernecks on Thursday. Sam Pryor, a 6-0 guard from Elgin & Andi Pierce, a 5-11 guard from Gerber, Okla. 
 
Leatherneck men's basketball also begins regular season play tonight, when they visit Wisconsin in Madison. The Badgers are ranked 17th in the men's preseason poll. Tip-off at the Kohl Center is set for 8pm and as part of the Leatherneck Sports Network, the game will air locally on 102.7FM starting at 6:45 and also on The Big 10 Network.

WIU Men's Soccer Forward Drew Whalen Earns Conference Offensive Player Of the Year Award

Western Illinois men's soccer junior forward Drew Whalen was named Summit League "Offensive Player of the Year" at the conference awards banquet last night. Whalen who's 10 goals & 23 points led the conference, also earned First Team All-Summit League honors, while teammates Austin Gochneaur & Erick Bloom were named to the Second Team.

 

Leatherneck men's soccer is the #4 seed at this years Summit League Conference Tournament, and will play top-seed & tourney host Denver tonight at 8pm.

The Western Illinois volleyball lost in three sets at IPFW last night. Freshman Sierra Bauder had eight kills in the set-back, while freshman Morgyn Bullock tallied 15 assists & junior Kaili Simmons added 13 digs in the loss. Leatherneck volleyball will wrap up their season on Saturday when they visit South Dakota State at 7pm.

Macomb's Stovall Earns IHSA Cross Country All-State Honors

Congratulations to Macomb freshman girls cross country runner Maya Stovall, who finished in 9th place at the IHSA Class A State Meet at Detweiler Park in Peoria on Saturday. Stovall's time of 17:53.6, broke the school record by two seconds. Her "Top 10" finish also earns her All-State Honors, which is a first for Macomb High.

Leatherneck Men's Soccer Earns Summit League Tournament Birth

Though off this past weekend, the Western Illinois men's soccer team earned a birth in the Summit League Tournament. The Leathernecks earned the #4 seed and will face top-seed Denver, who will host the tournament, with the semifinal taking place this Thursday at 8pm. The other semifinal takes place early on Thursday, between 2nd seed Omaha & #3 seed Oral Roberts.  The men's Summit League Champion will be crown on Saturday, November 14th. 
 
The Western Illinois volleyball team held "Senior Day" on Sunday and fell to Oral Roberts, 3-1. The two seniors Payton Crosser who finished with 13 kills and Jordan Jackson who tallied four kills and two blocks played their final match at Western Hall. The Leatherneck football team lost at #5 North Dakota State, 59-7 on Saturday. The Western Illinois men's basketball team scored a 90-48 home exhibition win over Knox College on Saturday. Leatherneck junior guard Garrett Covington led all scorers with 20 points in the win.

Western Illinois Women's Basketball Nets Exhibition Win; Other WIU Teams In Action This Weekend

The Western Illinois women's basketball team scored a 63-41 home exhibition win over Truman State last night. Michelle Maher scored 15 points, while Michelle Farrow & Taylor McLintock added 13 in the win. Leatherneck women's basketball tips-off the regular season one week from tonight at home versus Central Methodist. The Western Illinois men's basketball team will host their lone exhibition game tomorrow afternoon at 1pm against Knox College at Western Hall. 
 
The Leatherneck men's & women's swimming and diving teams are home with Valparaiso at 5pm today at the Brophy Hall Pool. Western Illinois volleyball wraps up their final home stand this weekend: versus South Dakota tonight at 7pm and at home on "Senior Day" Sunday against Oral Roberts at 1pm... both matches held at Western Hall. Leatherneck Football Players Receiving National Recognition

Western Illinois football junior place-kicker Nathan Knuffman, was recognized by the Fred Mitchell Award for Excellence in October. Knuffman was one of 32 kickers in the nation, representing all levels of college football. In early October he was named Missouri Valley Football Conference 'Special Teams Player of the Week' and one of six nationally by the College Sporting News as a National All-Star.

 

Knuffman's teammate, sophomore defensive back Aaron Diggs,  joined a list of 32 nationally selected to the College Football Performance Awards Watch List. All Division I FCS players are eligible for awards at their respective positions. The award winners will be announced on January 13, 2016. Diggs joins teammate Trenton Norvell (Offensive Player of the Year Midseason Watch List) being honored by the CFPA.

Western Illinois University Student-Athletes Earn All Conference Honors

Western Illinois women's soccer players, senior forward Skyler Jessop & freshman midfielder Kayla Kirkwood earn Summit League honors on Wednesday. Jessop was named Second Team All-Summit League, while Kirwood was named to the All-Freshmen team. It's the first confrence awards for both Jessop & Kirkwood. 
 
Leatherneck men's junior golfer Andrew Blackburn was named Summit League "Male Golfer of the Month of October" yesterday. Blackburn finished tied for 8th place at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate in Kansas City last month, and was 6th individually at the APSU Intercollegiate also last month.

Leatherneck Men's Soccer to Host Winter Soccer Clinic in December

Western Illinois men's soccer coach Dr. Eric Johnson announced that the team will be hosting its 2015 Leatherneck Soccer Winter Clinic on Sunday, December 13. The clinic, which will take place from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., is open to high school students in grades 10 through 12, as well as current junior college players.
 
Attendance to the clinic is limited to the first 50 players who register and pay the $25 registration fee. Participants will receive a Leatherneck Soccer t-shirt as part of the registration fee. Forms should be filled out and returned to Coach Johnson through mail, email (ep-johnson@wiu.edu), or fax (309-298-1960.

IHSA Area High School Volleyball Sectional Scores; Quincy High Wins Boys Soccer Supersectional

IHSA Sectional Volleyball last night at Class 2A Pleasant Plains, Williamsville beat Illini West, 2-0 (25-13, 25-13). At Class A Lewistown, Hartsburg-Emden over Southeastern, 2-0 (25-22, 25-23). In Class 3A high school boys soccer, Quincy High won the Normal Supersectional, 3-1 over Tinley Park & will meet Bartlett at 7pm this Friday in the Final Four in Hoffman Estates.

The Western Illinois basketball teams will be in exhibition action later this week. This Thursday (11/5), the Leatherneck women's basketball team will play their second exhibition when they host Truman State at 7pm. Leatherneck men's basketball will host their lone exhibition game on Saturday (11/7) vs. Knox College at 1pm. Western Illinois Athletics Weekend Wrap Up

The Western Illinois men's soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a 2-1 home "Senior Day" win over IUPUI on Sunday. Drew Whalen & Diego Lopez netted goals for the Leathernecks. The Western women's soccer team, hosted their "Senior Day" before the men's game yesterday, and lost a heart-breaker in overtime, 1-0 to visiting North Dakota State. 
 
The Western Illinois volleyball team dropped a match at Omaha on Sunday, 3-0. Senior Peyton Crosser tallied eight kills in the set-back for the Leathernecks, who'll return home for their final homestand this weekend. The Leatherneck football team lost 23-21 at home to Youngstown State on Saturday. Nikko Watson ran for two touchdowns in the loss & Lance Lenoir finished just shy of 100 yards receiving and a score. Adam Brott & Brett Taylor led the Western defense with 14 & 13 tackles respectively. Leatherneck football falls to 4-4 overall & 3-2 in the MVFC. 
 
Both the men's and women's Western Illinois cross country squards earned seventh place in The Summit League Championships at the Edgebrook Golf Course in Brookings. The women's team finished with a total of 259 points in the 6k while the men's squad scored 191 points in the 8k. South Dakota took the women's conference title with 38 points while IUPUI's 35 points earned them the men's crown.
